Here’s a list of 5 trees with beautiful fall colors to look for in the mitten this season:
With fall on our doorsteps, we are getting a front row seat to one of the greatest shows on earth, the changing of the leaves and Michigan’s fall colors. Michigan forests are being set ablaze as we speak, and it’ll only be getting better.
1. Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)
Michiganders will certainly know this sweet tree. While being a great source of maple syrup, it also has some of the most beautiful fall colors in the country! During the fall months, these trees take part in an amazing metamorphosis. The leaves of this tree seem to change to every color of the rainbow on their way from green to purple. It’s not uncommon to find many different colors on one tree at the same time!
2. Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides)
These gorgeous trees are found throughout Michigan but are especially prevalent in the north. Their leaves turn a delightful yellow in the fall and make a “quaking” sound as the wind rustles through them. These trees are impressive in more ways than that. One such aspen in Minnesota is thousands of years old!
3. Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)
The leaves on this tree will make any Michigander smile. The mitten-shaped leaves of this tree are very similar to our very own state! These leaves turn yellow, red, orange, and a beautiful deep purple in the fall! The sassafras has a wonderful smell as well so make sure you keep your eyes (and nose) open this fall!
4. Eastern Larch (Larix laricina)
This tree is quite an oddity. Also known as the tamarack, this tree is the only native deciduous conifer to Michigan. This means it’s the only cone-bearing tree (pine) to drop its needles! Before the needles drop they turn a radiant yellow that is quite a sight to see. Look for these trees in wetter areas around the state this fall.
5. Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)
Named for its peeling bark and known for its tasty hickory nuts, this tree has some splendid fall colors! The oblong leaves of the shagbark hickory turn a warm yellow-gold throughout the fall. A grove of these trees in the fall is quite a sight to behold.
