GRUB CONTROL SERVICES
Grub worms, the larvae of bugs such as beetles, can cause both direct and indirect damage to your lawn and landscaping. When they hatch, grubs feed off of the roots in your lawn, preventing the lawn from taking in nutrients. Grubs also attract animals such as skunks and raccoons, which damage your property by digging around. At Turf Tenders, we offer both a grub treatment and a grub preventative.
GRUB TREATMENT
Dylox grub control is a curative, contact control. It’s put down on the lawn and watered in. Once it comes into contact with the grub worms, they die. Dylox grub control targets existing grubs that are currently damaging your lawn. Grubs feed on the roots of your grass which eventually causes the plant to die. Grub damage appears as brown areas that grow outward as the grubs consume more roots. We apply Dylox grub control in the spring and fall if you have a problem.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF I HAVE GRUBS?
To check to see if the area has grubs envision a one foot square in your grass, then cut 3 sides of it with a knife or razor blade. Pull back the grass like it was carpet. If it is very easy to pull up because of lack of roots, grubs could be the problem. You will also usually see grub worms under the grass. These grubs are white and C-shaped. Another indicator of grubs is birds feeding around dead patches in your lawn. If your grass has grubs now, a Dylox grub control will clear up the problem and prevent any further damage.
GRUB PREVENTION
As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Prevent grubs from infesting your lawn in the first place with a Merit Grub Control. Merit Grub Control is our preventative grub control. This application is applied in the months of May, June, and July. This product prevents the grub eggs from maturing, thus preventing active grub damage. It works by being taken into the root system and stored there for 30-60 days. It’s watered into the lawn. This application is a good idea if you have had grub damage in the past. If you get a Merit Grub Control every year you are guaranteed to have a beautiful, grub free lawn.
After core aeration, it is important to continue regularly scheduled maintenance such as mowing, watering, and fertilizing to keep your yard looking its best. It is also recommended that you overseed or fertilize your lawn after core aeration as the opening in the ground provides deeper access for the seeds and fertilizer.
TYPES OF GRUBS
There are two main types of grubs that infest lawns in Michigan: European chafers and Japanese beetles. European chafers are the more damaging of the two, causing devastation to lawns. They may be found in all locations in Michigan, including much of the UP. European chafers generally mate and lay eggs in the evening, infesting your lawn with little warning. This usually happens in June and early July, and can be easily overlooked until your lawn starts dying. They’re usually found in drier turf.
Japanese beetle grubs lay most of their eggs in July, but can continue into August. They like to lay their eggs in wetter lawns, such as irrigated athletic fields and lawns that receive high maintenance. Japanese beetles can be found all over Michigan, but seem to be more concentrated in the north.
It takes about 10 days for the eggs of either species to hatch. They feed from August until October, spending the winter as large grubs below the surface. They cause more damage in the spring as they resume feeding as large grubs, feeding until mid-May. Even if the grubs do not directly kill your lawn, they can make it more susceptible to weeds and drought stress.

What Customers Say About Turf Tenders!
Love Turf Tenders. I have been a customer for over 5+ years and my lawn has never looked better. TT's uses quality fertilizers that promote healthy soil for the grass. It's also great to hear the same team on the phone when scheduling visits and seeing the same technicians come to service my yard month after month, year after year. Great local company - you can't go wrong with Turf Tenders.
The service I received last year from Turf-Tenders, was top notch. They came when scheduled and did a great job. They called to recommend different treatments and explained how my lawn would benefit, yet they didn't pressure me into buying those services. For all these reasons and more I will continue to trust Turf-Tenders with my lawn again this season.
